In The Beginning... There Was AjM Productions
 |
The history of today's
AjM Digital Media can actually be traced to its roots, some 3
decades ago. In January,
1971, owner and founder Alvin Murphy began his first business
adventure. AjM Productions started out in a small 3 room
office. Than, within just a few short months, the business
expanded and relocated to its newly built, fully sound proofed
studio facilities at 1245 Charnelton St. in downtown Eugene, Oregon. AjM
occupied the entire 1st floor below KEED Radio until 1975.
|
|
A modestly equipped, 4 track sound
recording studio; AjM Productions provided recording services to
many local bands in the Pacific Northwest, had its own record
label, produced radio commercials for local advertising
agencies, created an American History audio book series that was distributed to junior
high schools throughout the United States, and produced
nationally & internationally syndicated radio programs. One of
it's productions, a 12 hour history of black music, titled
"Black Gold", aired on Armed Forces Radio and on
various radio stations
such as KHJ Los Angeles and WNYW in New York City.

Al's Long Lost,
"Long Hair Days" |
This 4-track
professional Ampex
audio tape recorder, which used
1/2" recording tape, was the main machine at AjM Productions.
With a $6,000 price tag, this washing machine size analog tape
recorder was the state of the art back in the early 1970's. Its
big brothers, the 24, 32 and 64 Track versions, used in the big Hollywood
studios at the time, were essentially the same except for the number of
tracks supported. Strange as it may seem, today's home computers
provide far superior sound quality and editing flexibility, as opposed to
the best
audio recorders on the planet back then!. As for video - we're talking an advance of light
years!

We even had a piano!
|
Even though we brought in entire
bands, complete with drums, base guitars, and various other rather "loud"
instruments, the 24 hour rock and roll radio station directly above our
studios never heard a sound. This was to the credit of Edmond Murphy,
Al's father, who was the very skilled carpenter that built the studio and
went to great lengths to insure that the studios sound proofing was up to
par.
On the behalf of its clients,
AjM Productions recorded and produced many, many records - both 45rpm's as
well as 12" vinyl albums. These records were distributed on the
studios own AjM label. |
